Laidler went to school at Liverpool College, Oxford University and Princeton, and became a professor of chemistry at the University of Ottawa in Canada. He is an expert in the chemistry of enzymes and other biochemical processes. He has received various awards, including the Tory and Centenary Medals from the Royal Society of Canada. He enjoys gardening and acting.
